North Carolina Megan's Law

Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was passed into federal law in 1995. Megans Law requires that each state have a system in place for notifying the general public when a sexual offender is moves into their community.
Megan was merely seven years old when a prior sexual predator that was living accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and killed her. It was decided that had her family or other residents in the communtiy had known that a convicted sexual predator was living in their neighborhood, this heinous act could've been avoided. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any resistance.
Ever since the law was enacted, North Carolina has made it a point to protect its citizens the most current information regarding convicted sex offenders and their place of residence. The bill has shown that while sexual assaults are still a occuring in the United States, offenses committed by prior offenders are on a decline.
